The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America has issued a clear and strong statement regarding the recent events in Charlottesville VA, denouncing all forms of hatred, bigotry and racism, while at the same time offering forgiveness and reconciliation for haters who repent. It is such a well worded message that any attempt to lift a 'sound byte' from it would not do it justice. I would simply urge you to read it all.
However, it is especially worth noting one of the scripture passages they chose to include:
Jesus rebuked his disciples when they suggested that he violently retaliate against his enemies. "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them." (Luke 9:55-56)
This is precisely one of the key scripture passages I reference in my book, Facing Islam, for it reveals the spirit of Islam, the spirit of the age, the spirit of the Destroyer:
The extreme dichotomy between Christ and Muhammad is born out in every manner one may consider, such as how each responded to those who rejected their message.
Muhammad became a pirate raider and warlord, targeting caravans, cities and tribes, meting out punishment against non-Muslims with the sword, raping and looting as a matter of course, and leaving only destruction and misery in his wake. Yet Jesus rebukes even any hint of such a destroying spirit in His disciples, as seen in this passage:
"As they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, 'Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven to consume them, just as Elijah did?'
"But He turned and rebuked them, and said, 'You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.' And they went to another village." (Lk 9:51-56, emphasis added)
Muhammad is thus revealed to be of the spirit of the Destroyer, “in Hebrew Abaddon, in Greek Apollyon,” who is “the angel of the bottomless pit” referenced in the Apocalypse of John (Rev. 9:11).
It is this “spirit” which firmly ensconces Muhammad as the “prophet of antichrist.”
(Facing Islam, pp 119-120)
I would add that it is this same "spirit" which is at work in both the "white nationalists" and neo-Nazis as well as in the Antifa and Leftists. The spirit of the Destroyer has been unleashed in our darkening age.
Speaking the truth in love, our beloved hierarchs have set before us the Way of truth and love, of forgiveness and reconciliation, of the cross and resurrection. As the early 1st century Christian text 'The Didache' states at its outset:
"There are two Ways, one of Life and one of Death, and there is a great difference between the two Ways."
Let us choose the Way of Life, Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Amen.
