Charlottesville: An Apocalyptic Moment

Charlottesville reveals the demonic forces behind our horrific times, where the center does not hold, and the spirit of the Destroyer has been unleashed.

The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America has issued a clear and strong statement regarding the recent events in Charlottesville VA, denouncing all forms of hatred, bigotry and racism, while at the same time offering forgiveness and reconciliation for haters who repent. It is such a well worded message that any attempt to lift a 'sound byte' from it would not do it justice. I would simply urge you to read it all.

However, it is especially worth noting one of the scripture passages they chose to include:

Jesus rebuked his disciples when they suggested that he violently retaliate against his enemies. "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them."  (Luke 9:55-56)

This is precisely one of the key scripture passages I reference in my book, Facing Islam, for it reveals the spirit of Islam, the spirit of the age, the spirit of the Destroyer:

Searing Insights from one who almost converted to Islam

"As much as possible we should preach Christ. But that doesn’t mean we should pretend Islam is what its naive defenders want it to be. The burning flesh and severed limbs of innocents are there in the heart of it...

"Islam has a problem, and it has had a problem since its very inception. It is at war against whatever people it comes across. It slaughters in the Philippines. It slaughters in India. It slaughters in Myanmar. It slaughters in Nigeria. It slaughters in the Sudan. It has done these things from the beginning, and it is all right there in the Quran, let alone the hadith."

Out of the millions of words posted at Rod Dreher's blog, the below comments from one of his readers, Annie, come with a special weight. She writes as a Western Liberal who flirted with Islam. And she has some challenging things to say to those who believe Islam is a religion of peace, equivalent or even superior to Christianity. She does not explicitly address the 'Same God' belief, but implicitly, she rips it apart. Good on Rod Dreher for putting Annie's words front and center.

Islam Through Western Liberal Eyes
Rod Dreher, The American Conservative, May 24, 2017:

Reader Annie comments on the Manchester bombing thread:

Western liberals have a bad habit of “denying agency.” Our self-absorbed knee-jerk tendency to blame all the world’s woes on the evil West is just a way of putting ourselves at the center of every story, for reasons best left unaddressed here.
Those are our real sins, and every single person writing here is complicit in them.
But let’s get something straight: this cultural relativism is nonsense.
Islam has a problem, and it has had a problem since its very inception. It is at war against itself and against whatever people it comes across. It slaughters in the Philippines. It slaughters in India. It slaughters in Myanmar. It slaughters in Nigeria. It slaughters in the Sudan. It has done these things from the beginning, and it is all right there in the Quran, let alone the hadith.

Can There Have Been Two Annunciations?

In addition to being Good Friday for Western Christians, last Friday was March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary. As the hymn for the Feast says,

Today is the beginning of our salvation,
The revelation of the eternal mystery!
The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin
As Gabriel announces the coming of Grace...

Islam also begins with an annunciation of sorts, to Muhammad, coincidentally by a spirit being also identified as the angel Jibril (Gabriel). Only the nature and outcome of that annunciation is quite different from the one to the Virgin Mary six centuries earlier.

This article contrasts the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, with that 'second annunciation', to Muhammad. This is one of the most significant and revealing facts about Islam, one which we should always keep in the forefront of our considerations.

If Muslims worship the Same God as Christians, how could that Same God possibly send two such radically opposed revelations and messages? And could it be the Same God if He chose to send His revelation to Muhammad through such a dark and blatantly evil "annunciation"?

MONOTHEISM, PART 3: ISLAM, by Hieromonk Job (Gumerov)

The religion of the Law, which for 15 centuries prepared the chosen people for the coming into the world of the its Savior, the Incarnate Lord Jesus Christ, preceded New Testament religion. According to the Holy Apostle Paul, "the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ" (Gal. 3:24)... When the Savior came into the world, Old Testament religion had fulfilled its purpose.
Islam, having arisen in Arabia in the seventh century, appeared as the religion of the law six centuries after the God of the chosen people of the religion of the Law fulfilled its purpose.
The difference between the Old Testament religion of the Law and Islam is not only that the latter emerged more than two thousand years after God gave on Mount Sinai the Ten Commandments and other precepts that governed life for the chosen people. The most important difference is that the Law of Moses has a Divine source... The founder of Islam, however, did not have a Divine revelation.

This theological study by Hieromonk Job (Gumerov) is a very helpful discussion of several fundamental problems with Islam's claim to be the true religion, correcting the supposed errors of Judaism and Christianity.

Islam: Origins

The religion of the Law, which for 15 centuries prepared the chosen people for the coming into the world of the its Savior, the Incarnate Lord Jesus Christ, preceded New Testament religion. According to the Holy Apostle Paul, "the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ" (Gal. 3:24). It was all in all only "a shadow of good things to come" (Heb. 10:1). When the Savior came into the world, Old Testament religion had fulfilled its purpose. Our Lord Jesus Christ revealed to us the mystery of the Heavenly Kingdom and established the New Covenant, which was foretold by the prophet Jeremiah. "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people" (Jer. 31:31-33).

Man was redeemed from original sin and its consequences by the voluntary death on the Cross of Jesus Christ as Savior of the World. He entered into an entirely new period in terms of his relationship with God in comparison with the Old Testament: instead of the law, there was a free condition of sonship and grace. Man received new means for achieving the ideal set for him of moral perfection as a necessary condition for salvation.

The most important difference is that the Law of Moses has a Divine source. The book of Exodus gives a narrative of the majestic Epiphany. "And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up" (Exod. 19:17-20).

The founder of Islam, however, did not have a Divine revelation.

St Paisios of Mount Athos: 'There's a war on today, a holy war. I must be on the front lines.'

"Today's situation can be resisted only spiritually, not by worldly means..."

St. Paisios of Mt Athos (commemorated July 12)

From an Orthodox Church Bulletin comes this 'word' (scroll to bottom) from the newly glorified St. Paisios the Athonite, which is directly applicable not only to the assault on the Faith, the Family and the Church by secularism, but also to the challenge and threat of Islam.

How many Orthodox Christians are so poorly grounded in their faith as to believe Islam is wholly compatible with Christianity? One of the reasons I wrote my book was to warn those like the young woman in my former parish (whom I write about in my Epilogue), who sincerely believed that because Muslims venerate Jesus, therefore they are virtually one with us. When she began dating a Muslim man, she was scandalized by our priest warning her that if she married a Muslim, she would be denying Jesus Christ and committing apostasy. She could not be dissuaded, and soon turned away from Christ and became a Muslim.

I recall another case of an Orthodox woman of Lebanese descent (whom I have known for many years) with whom I had a shocking discussion following the Divine Liturgy one Sunday. She was relating her views on the historical procession of the monotheistic religions, from Judaism to Christianity to Islam, and asserted that this sequential ordering reflected progressively higher forms of knowledge, with Islam representing the highest and most sublime form of knowledge! This due to Muhammad receiving supposedly divine revelations of the literal words of God.

Apparently this woman failed to be touched by the great mystery of the ultimate revelation: the very Word and Logos of God becoming incarnate, or by our divine calling to be children of God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, acquiring the Mind of Christ, the Mind of God Himself. This poor woman, through listening to ideas "in the air" and assenting with her fallen reasoning had given herself over to an anti-Christ false "gnosis" which leads straight to apostasy.

The bizarre cognitive dissonance alone of an Orthodox Christian putting forth such a view was bad enough, but to hear someone say such a brazen and blasphemous heresy immediately after receiving Holy Communion — the very Body and Blood of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ — was one of the most disturbing moments of my Christian life.

Truly the enemy of souls is hard at work, striving however he can to lead people into spiritual delusion. As the Lord teaches us, Satan is the "father of lies" (JN 8:44) and the multifaceted heresy of Islam and our modern world's affirmation of it and all other religions as equally valid paths to God are among his most successful deceptions.

Satan seeks to increase his harvest of souls, drawing as many into perdition as he can. He uses governments, culture, comfort, affluence, political correctness, the desire to be "nice", to get along, and to be liked, to make us timid and ashamed to proclaim and live our faith. He is quite happy and content with Christians who remain silent and do nothing, for, as St Gregory the Theologian warned, "By your silence you can betray God."

Hieromonk Job Gumerov - Monotheism, Part 3: Islam

This is a much welcomed and profound study of Islam by Hieromonk Job (Gumerov), the third in his series on Monotheism being published by Pravoslavie.

Metropolitan Hilarion administers the rite of reuniting those who temporarily fell away from the Orthodox Church

I saw this report as offering a wonderful image and affirmation of hope for those who, whether by marriage or because they fell into spiritual delusion, were tempted away from Jesus Christ and the Orthodox Church and into Islam. The Church, in her compassion and practice, has various pastoral means by which to restore those who have left her.

If you, dear reader, see yourself in this description at all, don't hesitate! Contact an Orthodox Christian priest immediately, especially at this holy time of the year, as we prepare to follow Christ through the week of His Passion and Crucifixion. A timely phone call might quickly open the way for you to join in a Glorious Resurrection!

Metropolitan Hilarion administers the rite of reuniting those who temporarily fell away from the Orthodox Church
Pravmir — April 10, 2014

The Church has all the necessary things to make a person happy in this life and to prepare him or her for moving to the future life.

On April 9, 2014, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, administered the rite of reuniting those who temporarily fell away from the Orthodox Church by diverting into various false teachings and sects, at the church of Our Lady the Joy to All the Afflicted-in-Bolshaya Ordynka.

The rite of reunification is administered in this church twice a year. On April 9, fifty four people renounced heathenism, sectarian delusions and schismatic false belief by pledging on the Gospel allegiance to the Church. After the oath, Metropolitan Hilarion laid his homophor on the head of each of those who reunited with the Church.

In his word of instruction, Metropolitan Hilarion noted in particular.

“Today the Lord has brought you back to the Holy Church – the Church to which you were once brought by God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, from which you fell away through delusions and to which you have returned today through repentance”.

Christian Jihadists?

by Ralph H. Sidway

Based on reports out of Syria, it appears some Christians are fighting back against their Muslim persecutors. This is to be expected. However, others are taking things too far, even to the point of creating a form of Christianized jihad, as Walid and Theodore Shoebat seems to advocate here, using passages from the Old Testament to justify perpetual warfare against Muslims:

...The Christians vanquished them, “smote them, and slew them,” (Joshua 10:26), and killed 65 Muslims. And as the Israelites did unto their enemies, the Christians came to the bodies of the slain Muslims, “and put their feet upon the necks of them.” (Joshua 10:24
Here is a video showing the Christians stepping in triumph upon the corpses of their enemies (NOTE: The Christians say Allahu Akbar in mockery of the jihadists).
Here is another clip, showing the carcasses of the heretics.
One Christian militant said: "The battle lasted 7 hours. The attack was fearsome, but our men were very eager to fight..."
It was in Syria where Abraham smote the wicked king Chedorlaomer and his confederacy of despots, and liberated Lot (Genesis 14:15); it was in Syria where David slew 22,000 pagans (2 Samuel 8:5); it was in Syria where Heaven’s light enwrapped St. Paul, and “he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?” (Acts 9:3-4). It is in Syria where holy warriors now fight the persecutors of Christ; and it will be in this same land, when Christ returns in the final crusade, that “Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap”, (Isaiah 17:1) in which the Islamists will be wiped out, and the saints triumphant.
Saidnaya, the city in which this fighting is taking place, literally means “Our Lady” in Syriac, referring to the Virgin Mary. It was Mary who said in her song, that God “hath shewed strength with his arm” (Luke 1:51), and it is through these Christian militants, that God has illustrated the fortitude of His arm, in that while the whole of Saidnaya is conquered, the Muslims still cannot take the Church of the Cherubim.
It is said by the native Christians that Saidnaya is the place where Cain killed Abel; and how profound is it, that now, in this very spot, the successors of Cain are still butchering the successors of Abel, but with these modern crusaders, the followers of the holy son of Adam has succeeded in crushing the acolytes of his wicked brother.

What a misunderstanding and distortion of the story of Cain and Abel! Abel was an innocent, and did not raise his hand against his brother. He was an early type of Christ: having offered a pleasing sacrifice to God, he was conspired against and killed by his self-deceived brother.

Church of England Accused of 'Dumbing Down' Christening Service

The Great Apostasy accelerates as the milktoast, lukewarm Anglicans wonder why their pews are empty, and why England is being rapidly overwhelmed by Islam.

Tragically, even those quoted in the below article as resisting the 'eviscerated' baptismal service fail to express the basic principle of 'Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi', and seem unable to make a convincing, far less an inspiring, case for preserving the fullness of their church's liturgical tradition. With the already total apostasy in the Episcopal Church in America and these latest developments, it is time for the Orthodox Churches to cease official dialogue with the Church of England, whose house is crumbling and facing desolation.

At the same time, the Orthodox Church opens wide her arms to those fleeing the Apostasy and seeking the true and timeless Christian Faith. Suggested reading for interested Anglicans and Episcopalians include An Open Letter to Orthodox Anglicans, and Anglican-Orthodox Pilgrimage.

Church of England Accused of 'Dumbing Down' Christening Service
The Telegraph via Pravoslavie — 1/8/2014

The Church of England has been accused of “dumbing down” its traditional christening ceremony after rewriting the service for a modern congregation.

Parents and godparents are no longer asked to “reject the devil”, “repent of sins” or “submit” to Christ under the new wording, aimed at making the service easier to understand.

But critics claim the new version strips out “key elements” of the baptism service and undermines its meaning, according to the Mail on Sunday.

The new text, which is supported by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, removes the questions, ‘Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?’ and ‘Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour?’, which prompted the replies. 'I reject them' and 'I repent of them' respectively.

Now the vicar will ask: “Do you reject evil? And it all its many forms? And all its empty promises?”.

There is no mention of the devil or sin in the new service which is already being used in 1000 parishes and is now to be tested in a trial lasting until Easter.

The congregation is no longer asked to “submit to Christ as Lord” as the idea of submission is considered too controversial, particularly for women.

RUSSIAN DEPUTY CHAIRMAN: US STRIKE ON SYRIA WOULD BE 'NOTHING LESS THAN AGGRESSION'

Russia may send Parliamentary delegation to meet with US Congress.

Voice of Russia — 9/4/2013

As the Syrian conflict has significantly escalated since August 21, following a chemical weapons attack allegedly carried out by the Syrian government near Damascus, Ilyas Umakhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federal Council, gave his exclusive comment to the Voice of Russia on the possibility of sending a delegation of Russian MPs to the US to discuss the situation in Syria.

The most important topic right now is that the speaker of the US Congress refused to meet the Russian delegation. How can you comment on this? What is the probability that this meeting will take place?

An ordinary, usual, assiduous diplomatic work on the arrangement of a program for the visit of Russian MPs is under way. As you probably know, the delegation consists of State Duma and Federal Council members. The formation of the delegation is at its final stage. So it wouldn’t be correct to say that the speaker of the US House of Representatives turned down a proposal of the meeting with Russian MPs.

Christians, other minorities in Syria fear ‘ethnic cleansing’

By Slobodan Lekic — Stars and Stripes, via OCP Media – 8/22/2013

DAMASCUS, Syria — It’s a sweltering Friday night and the brightly lit streets of the mainly Christian neighborhood of Kasaa throb with the rhythms of music and the laughter of scores of young men and women strolling or sitting in outdoor cafes sipping beer or soft drinks.

That is, until the deep rumble of twin 82 mm mortar blasts. The music stops, shops are shuttered, the streets are empty.

Welcome to Damascus.

Syrian rebels, who are mostly Sunni Muslims, have repeatedly shelled Christian neighborhoods in the city, including Kasaa, with its wide avenues, apartment blocks and leafy parks. The opposition Free Syrian Army claims it strikes only government targets, but constant shelling of the civilian quarter suggests otherwise.

Over the past year, many Christians have fled the neighborhood, moving to other areas of the capital or into neighboring Lebanon. Some who remain say they fear the rebels are aiming to achieve “ethnic cleansing” — the policy of eliminating unwanted ethnic or religious groups by terror that gained international notoriety during the Bosnian war 20 years ago.

Many Syrian Christians say they fear becoming victims of the same kind of targeted anti-Christian violence that resulted from the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. This persecution, known here as the “American solution,” caused a massive exodus — of the 1.5 million Christians who lived in Iraq in 2000, less than 300,000 remain today.

“The terrorists are trying to push the Christians out of this area,” said Isan Bahri, the 44-year-old owner of a mechanical shop in the Kasaa district of eastern Damascus that the rebels have been trying to capture. “They are not shooting at the army, they are intentionally aiming for civilians.”

Female Muslim Convert from Michigan who died in Syria fighting for Jihadists

This tragic story (scroll down for the Reuters report) raises questions about what prompts people to convert to Islam, especially Christians, and especially young Christian women.

It hits somewhat close to home, as several years ago a young woman from my parish committed apostasy and converted to Islam. Though she seemed to convert through marriage, she had long held affinities for Islam through her experiences with Muslim friends in college. After converting, she soon fully embraced wearing the hijab, and was sharing her new found faith through local news op eds and interviews, as well as staying in regular touch with some of my friends in the parish, presumably to witness her new faith to them. My friends and I lost touch with her after several years, so presumably she is still in the "moderate" Muslim camp, though last we knew, she and her husband were living in a city with a large mosque with an extremist imam and radical ties.

One can understand to some extent the counter-cultural attraction Islam may have for a young woman of modest manner, who sees the hijab as a desirable thing. Yet the irony is that in the Orthodox Church, a woman can also wear a head covering, and is encouraged to practice not only outward modesty, but inward holiness, being given exalted models of womanhood to emulate, from the Virgin Mary herself, to the Myrrhbearing Women, to the heroic martyrs Catherine and Barbara, St Macrina the Elder, grandmother to three saints of the Church, St Mary of Egypt, and many, many others.

In our own day, here in America, it often seems women monastics are setting the most consistent example for the monastic life, such as at Holy Transfiguration in Ellwood City and the Dormition of the Mother of God Monastery in Michigan.

Similarly, in parish life, women are every bit the pillars as the men, perhaps even more so based on my experiences, teaching church school, organizing charitable drives, welcoming visitors, serving on parish council, organizing retreats, helping form and disciple young women converts and couples, singing in the choir, leading youth camp retreats, etc.

There is simply no reason for a young woman to reject this vibrant, living tradition of sanctity, holiness, virtue, and above all, devotion to Jesus Christ, the Blessed Trinity, and the Orthodox Church. Thus cases like the young woman from my parish are clear-cut examples of spiritual delusion of some kind or another.

In her case, she came from a Quaker upbringing, with the general principle to "embrace truth wherever you find it." This syncretistic philosophy is the heretical obverse of St Justin's teaching of the "Seeds of the Logos" planted in all peoples and faith traditions, whereby a Christian can discern the points which will resonate for their non-Christian friends and acquaintances, from which she/he may begin to witness to them the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Sadly, this notion eluded this young woman, who bought into the Muslim claim that Islam properly venerates Jesus, and that Islam and Christianity are fully compatible. She seemed unable to understand or accept our priest's warning to her that if she married a Muslim man she would be excommunicating herself from the Church and denying Jesus Christ, committing outright apostasy. Thank God for his clear, true and loving pastoral counsel, yet she completely rejected his words, and is now in serious spiritual danger, though we hope and pray for her to repent and return to Christ.

Other counter-jihad writers have felt prompted by the tale of this Michigan woman to ask why yet another convert to Islam felt compelled to wage jihad, and why no mainstream Muslim organizations in the U.S. offer any solutions or programs to teach Muslims to reject the jihadist teachings. Of course, as we know, the Quran and all of Islam's source texts and all its schools of jurisprudence command offensive jihad as obligatory upon all Muslims. If they cannot fight, they are called upon to support the jihad, hence the continuous prosecutions of terrorist funding cases in the U.S. and elsewhere.

But here, we must reflect on the loss of a poor, deceived soul, who thought she was finding life, and is instead in the grave here, and God alone knows the condition of her soul after death.

The frightful tragedy of the Michigan woman who was killed fighting on behalf of jihadists in Syria is yet another shocking reminder of the pervasive spiritual blindness of our time, and of the powerful delusions unleashed upon our age.

Female convert to Islam from Michigan dies in Syria fighting for the jihadists.

A 33-year-old Michigan woman and convert to Islam has been killed in Syria while fighting with opposition forces against the government of President Bashar Assad in the country's civil war, her family said on Thursday.

The woman's aunt told Reuters that the FBI had informed her on Thursday afternoon of the death of her niece, Nicole Mansfield of Flint, but said she did not have the details of how she died.

"I'm just devastated," said the aunt, Monica Mansfield Speelman. "Evidently, she was fighting with opposition forces."

Speelman said Mansfield, a single mother of an 18-year-old daughter, had converted to Islam about five years ago but that she did not know when her niece had traveled to Syria.

"I didn't think she would stoop that low to go over there and try to harm anybody," Speelman said of her niece, who she said had worked at a group home....
