Tennessee Promotes Islam: 7th-graders made to recite Muslim statement of faith

The Maury County School District in Tennessee skips whole chapters on the Rise of Christianity and Judaism, but spends three weeks on Islam, and expressly instructs students to write and recite the Shahada, the Islamic profession of faith, by which one becomes a Muslim.

Parents are rightfully outraged at this blatant attempt at indoctrinating their children into the tenets of Islam. The preferential treatment of Islam in public education may also open Tennessee to lawsuits for violating the U.S. Constitution's "establishment clause."

This is hardly a new phenomenon. A landmark 2013 article in Breitbart News surveyed other instances of Islamic proselytization being forced upon public school students:
Public schools in Florida are teaching that Muhammad is “God’s messenger.” In Indiana, a Muslim family went from classroom to classroom in a public school, handing out material proselytizing for Islam. Texas public school students were made to wear burqas...
Tennessee has somehow become a real hotbed for this type of stealth jihad. From the same article:
In August 2013, a Tennessee elementary school banned pork to avoid offending Muslims. Children are drawing the five pillars of Islam in Tennessee public schools. The Nashville, Tennessee public school system is teaching dangerous lies in an Islamic lesson plan written by Islamic dissemblers and rife with grammatical errors and poor English...
This isn’t public education. This is dawah. And it is happening all over, but patriots are fighting back: in September 2013, an Ohio mom got an Islamic proselytizing video removed from her child’s seventh-grade history class. In November 2013, hundreds of parents protested against pro-Islam indoctrination contained in a public school textbook.

Judging from the below article ("they discuss Christianity a little bit during the Middle Ages"), Orthodox Christianity is likely not being addressed at all, which only allows the perpetuation of misperceptions about Russia, Greece, and Slavic nations, as well as of Middle Eastern and African Christians. This in spite of the fact that Orthodox Christians comprise the second largest Christian confession, with over 230 million believers worldwide.

Significantly, all Orthodox, Coptic and Oriental Christians have had epochal confrontations with Islam's 14-century-long jihad, many of them suffering mass martyrdoms, or, as the modern world terms it, genocide. But you can be certain that is not going to be addressed in the TN Core approved curriculum, certainly not while the anti-Christian regime in Washington and the American mainstream media try to foment public hatred of Christian Russia.

Christian parents, be aware of what your children are being taught! Make your voice heard! Public confrontation of such tactics is often successful in forcing government officials to back down and remove Islamic propaganda from school curricula.

7th-graders in Tennessee made to recite 'Allah is the only God' in public school
by Thomas D. Williams, PhD, Breitbart News, September 10, 2015:

Middle school parents in Tennessee are up in arms on learning that their children were instructed to recite and write, “Allah is the only god,” as part of a world history project.

In the Maury County School District, students were assigned a Five Pillars of Islam project that included the translation of the pillar of “Shahada” as being, “There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is his prophet.”

Joy Ellis, the mother of a seventh-grader at Spring Hill Middle School, said that Christian children should not be instructed to write the Shahada.

Conversion of a Muslim mufti to Jesus Christ

"'I have come to realize that Christ is the truth! And that you, the Orthodox Church, hold true faith 100%. So please, go to my village, teach my fellow villagers about your faith and baptize them!'... We realized that if a Muslim who holds an important position dared to change his religion, this conversion would not leave indifferent the fanatics of his faith, all those who ruthlessly take people’s lives without the fear of the God of love…"

The names and location of this true account have been withheld to protect the faithful and the missionaries.

Confession of a Muslim mufti; true story
Orthodox Missionary Fraternity via Pravoslavie — October 2014

In the years that we have been working here we have repeatedly had great difficulties trying to find suitable land in densely populated areas in order to build centers and churches, where the newly illuminated natives would be able to be catechized, assemble, worship God, get to know and experience the living Orthodox faith.

All the central spots in busy districts are already occupied by various heretical doctrines, which are, incidentally, housed in prestigious buildings. This hurts us deeply. We feel that the Orthodox Church deserves the best, not for human glory but for the glory of real God. However, over time there have been several occasions when we have had the chance to see that God Himself provides and finds various solutions His own way.

So, a few years ago, it was thought a great blessing for us to be able to buy at a very reasonable price – which made everyone wonder – a central building plot in a region where an Orthodox core of fervent natives had been formed many years before.

The initial joy of finding that beautiful piece of land did not last long as it was soon replaced by problems and temptations coming from everywhere. Christian and Muslim groups began to resent the unexpected “growth’ of an Orthodox church among them!

From then on a great spiritual struggle started off. The zeal of the faithful natives led them to go to that place every day and pray in faith and pain. “How could we possibly avoid temptations and how could we not expect to have help from above?” they said.

We repeatedly received anonymous threatening telephone calls and not only. Slanderous comments were often disseminated about the Orthodox partners working in the region. The greatest difficulty, however, was yet to come.

Suddenly, the Muslims raised territorial claims and demanded that the land be kept as it was and that an Orthodox church should not be erected there; as a result, we started a legal but time-consuming and tedious procedure of discussions with local and Muslim authorities in order to find a solution.

The state would not grant us permission to build anything unless we had the formal consent of the Muslims; thus what followed was a number of meetings with leading Muslim officials in order to resolve the problem.

'Perfected by the Sword' - The Way of Martyrdom in Our Times: Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos

"The Church today must prepare her children and those who love Christ and His salvation for martyrdom, to become martyrs for Christ. Theology, missions and social work outside of the feel and view of martyrdom has no particular value. The great Elders during the time of the Turkish occupation were “coaches” of the martyrs. This is what the great Elders are doing also today."
— Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos
"The way of the Church is the way of sacrifice and martyrdom – this has been so since the foundation of the Church and it remains true for us today... We cannot begin to speak about how to expand the mission, if we do not begin with the reality of martyrdom, which is the only authentic foundation for our Apostolic work... We are here, in North America, called to be apostles and martyrs for Christ."
— Metropolitan Tikhon of the OCA, (Source)

Holiness and Martyrdom in Our Times:
An Interview with Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos
Pravmir — September 9, 2015

Holiness, asceticism, discernment and martyrdom are great riches of our Church that move us, attract us, transform us and save us from the distractions and lies of this world in every era. In an interview with His Eminence Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos and Agiou Vlasiou, he gives answers to the questions of a journalist (George Theoharis from /Agioritikovima.gr/) on these issues, and speaks of other aspects of ecclesiastical life...

– In many parts of the world today we see that Orthodoxy is persecuted. Where do you think our enemies will reach?

– You are absolutely right. Wherever an Orthodox Church exists it accepts temptations and persecutions. It is an undeviating law. We see this wherever an Orthodox Church exists – North, South, East and West. The only thing different is the method of persecution in each country. Sometimes it is obvious and aggressive and reminiscent of the ancient times of early Christianity, and sometimes it is insidious and more dangerous, such as secularization, that is, the intermingling with the world.

The Orthodox Church is the Body of Christ, it is the brilliant sun that causes and invites pain to those whose eyes are unhealthy and have vision problems. And where the sun is there is also a shadow, and in the shadow is darkness, where many bloodthirsty beasts circulate.

When people hate Christ, the Truth, the Orthodox Church, they have internal problems and can reach unfathomable places, to the point of madness. I saw on the internet a frightening scene of the beheading of a Christian by a fanatical Muslim and I was shocked. I thought how this was the way the Apostles and Martyrs were martyred, such as when the Synaxarion says “they were perfected by the sword”.

And this is a test for us who love to have a good time, who compromise, who seek prosperity. Hence, persecutions show the internal illnesses of the persecutors, as well as the greatness of Christians. The measure of our love for Christ is very high. Holiness and faithfulness to the evangelical commandments are not given with the low criteria of ethical and social works, but they must have high standards.

The New Dark Age: U.S. and West Victimize Christians Fleeing ISIS

The "Christian" West reveals its hatred of Christianity by openly persecuting Eastern Christian refugees and aiding those who murder and terrorize them. We have entered a new Dark Age in all but name. We are living in the Age of Tribulation.

Iraqi Christians demonstrate by the Otay Detention Facility, San Diego, California

According to a recent NPR report, the U.S. supported “moderate” coalition fighting both Bashar Assad and the Islamic State in Syria “has extremists in its own ranks who have mistreated Christians and forced them out of their homes”—just as IS has done.

Christian minorities forced out of their homes who manage to reach Western nations—including the United States—sometimes encounter more trouble.

Despite having family members to sponsor them, a group of 20 Christians who fled the Islamic State in Iraq have been imprisoned indefinitely at the Otay Detention Facility in San Diego, even though they have local family members and Christian leaders who vouch for them (the primary way that the majority of detained foreign nationals are released is to the supervision of American citizens vouching for them).

Activists say that the men and women in detention have been held indefinitely for too long, including by the U.S. government’s own standards. Some have been imprisoned for over seven months with no hearing date set for their release.

Mark Arabo, a spokesman for the Chaldean community in San Diego said “they are being held without a real reason…. They’ve escaped hell [IS]. Let’s allow them to reunite with their families.”

The detainees include a woman who pleaded to see her sickly mother.  The mother died before being reunited with her daughter who escaped the clutches of IS.  “She had been begging to be let out” of the U.S. detention center and see her dying mother, said a priest aware of her case.

Discussing the ongoing plight of these Iraqi Christians,  San Diego’s East County Magazine concludes:  “Why the federal government has failed to take steps to expedite such reunification in cases where family and religious leaders are willing to vouch for and help those seeking asylum here, then, remains an unfathomable mystery.”

Such “unfathomable mysteries” are reminiscent of the U.S. State Dept.’s habit of inviting Muslim representatives but denying visas to Christian representatives. Since the start of 2015, 4,205 Muslims have been admitted into the U.S. from Iraq but only 727 Christians.  For every one Christian the U.S. grants asylum, it grants asylum to five or six Muslims—even though Christians, as persecuted “infidel” minorities, are in much greater need of sanctuary, not to mention more assimilating to American culture than Muslims.

Former Archbishop of Canterbury warns against 'Muslim mass immigration to Europe'

"The frustration for those of us who have been calling for compassion for Syrian victims for many months is that the Christian community is yet again left at the bottom of the heap... Britain should make Syrian Christians a priority... We are a Christian nation with an established Church so Syrian Christians will find no challenge to integration...

"There has been too much Muslim mass immigration to Europe. Isn't it high-time instead for the oil-rich Gulf States to open their doors to the many Muslims who are fleeing conflict? Surely if they are concerned for fellow Muslims who prefer to live in Muslim-majority countries, then they have a moral responsibility to intervene...

"It is, of course, quite right that Europe has woken to the sheer scale of human suffering in Syria. It is equally right that our compassionate instincts will drive us to fund-raise and campaign for the innocent victims of the conflict. But that compassion must be realistic and clear-headed."

— Lord George Carey, Former Archbishop of Canterbury

It is reassuring to hear a Christian leader speak so forthrightly abut the dangers of Muslim Mass Immigration, and the need for the Christian West to care for the Christian victims.

Britain Has a Duty to Rescue Syria's Christians
by George Carey, the Telegraph via AINA, September 6, 2015:

The dramatic and disturbing developments of the past few days have introduced a new, heart-rending dimension to this refugee crisis. Undoubtedly, the most disturbing aspect is just how impotent Europe is proving itself to be. If the EU is not resilient in the face of this disaster, it could be torn apart.

I can't help thinking of Corporal Jones's catchphrase -- "Don't panic!" But even the Germans are panicking as Angela Merkel, in a desperate attempt to cajole her fellow European leaders into accepting binding quotas, has declared open season for up to 800,000 Syrians to come to Germany.

Isn't it a bit rich for the Germans to criticise other nations, including Britain, for failing to accept refugees? For years, our warm-hearted land has consistently accepted more asylum-seekers than Germany.

Besides, it would be a mistake to give way to bullying calls to immediately open our doors to tens of thousands of refugees. We are a small island and recent immigration figures are highly disturbing. Last year, a net figure of 330,000 people settled among us -- more than the population of Sunderland. Imagine this continuing, year after year.

Alas, the signal that Germany is opening its doors to this influx will make Europe into an even more attractive magnet for those who are genuine refugees -- but also to floods of economic migrants, most of whom are young men travelling alone. We don't even know how many of these have been combatants in the civil war.

If some of what I say sounds harsh or, heaven forbid, a touch unchristian, let me make it clear that I welcome David Cameron's announcement to allow thousands more to enter Britain through refugee camps in Syria's neighbouring countries. In the long term, this strategy will cut out the traffickers and reduce the risk of the sea and land journeys.

But the frustration for those of us who have been calling for compassion for Syrian victims for many months is that the Christian community is yet again left at the bottom of the heap.

St. Herman's Monastery celebrates 33rd Anniversary of Repose of Fr. Seraphim Rose

Fr Seraphim's life was that of "suffering Orthodoxy." He always sought the truth, suffering for want of it, and when he found the Truth in the Person of Jesus Christ, he suffered in service of Him.
“He found that the Truth is discovered in suffering, and in order to go deeper into the Truth you have to suffer for it, and you draw closer to God in pain of heart and you pray to God with pain of heart. This is how you draw closer to Him and this is also how you pray for others” Fr. Damascene stated. He continued, “In this way he was very similar to elders of our times such as Elder Paisios of Mt. Athos and also Elder Porphyrios.”

Pravoslavie — September 4, 2015

(Platina, CA) August 20/September 2 marked the thirty-third anniversary of the falling asleep in the Lord of Hieromonk Seraphim Rose of blessed memory. Abbot Damascene and the brotherhood of St. Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, CA, of which Fr. Seraphim was the co-founder, celebrated simply this joyous feast of the monastery with several visiting clergy and pilgrims.

On the evening of August 19/September 1 the commemoration began with Vespers in the main church of the monastery, with Bishop Saba of the Georgian Apostolic Orthodox Church in North America in attendance along with two Georgian priests, Frs. Evtimi and Arsenie. Fr. Seraphim reposed during the period of the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, to whom he was greatly devoted. The brotherhood choir chanted hymns in praise of the Mother of God and her bodily assumption into Heaven, fitting for the celebration of America’s own blessed Seraphim who awaits the bodily resurrection.

Metropolitan Saba serving the Pannikhida for Fr. Seraphim
Following Vespers the gathered faithful processed up the hill to Fr. Seraphim’s grave at the Entrance of the Theotokos “Skete,” where a Pannikhida was served in his honor in three languages, demonstrating that Fr. Seraphim is indeed, in the words of Hieroschemamonk Ambrose, a “universal saint.” Fr. Damascene and the monastery’s Fr. Paisy served in English, along with Bp. Saba serving in Georgian, and Archimandrite Hilarion of the Monastery of the Holy Archangels Gabriel and Michael in Draganac, in Kosovo, Serbia who arrived during the Pannikhida, serving in Serbian.

Following the service Fr. Damascene offered some brief words of welcome to the visiting clergy and pilgrims, and spoke of Fr. Seraphim’s life in terms of “suffering Orthodoxy.” He noted that Fr. Seraphim always sought the truth, suffering for want of it, and when he found the Truth in the Person of Jesus Christ, he suffered in service of Him.

He also spoke of Fr. Seraphim’s spiritual connection, through suffering, with the Orthodox Christians of the lands that labored under Communism where “the roots of Orthodoxy are deep and ancient,” saying that, “It’s very valuable for us to be gathered together and to experience this unity of faith and experience this spiritual resurrection together gathered around Fr. Seraphim. And we pray and ask his prayers that one day we’ll be gathered with him in the kingdom of Heaven, which was the goal of his life and where he prays for us now.”

Sectsploitation: How to Win Hearts and Minds in the Islamic World

This 2009 article, though dated in terms of current events, is very helpful in setting forth the variegated landscape of Islam, and what that might portend for the Western response to the global jihad. Christians will acquire a more well-rounded understanding of the various sects of Islam by familiarizing themselves with this article.

by Timothy R. Furnish, PhD, History News Network, May 31, 2009
Mr. Furnish’s doctorate is in Islamic history, he works as an author and consultant, and his website is www.mahdiwatch.org

A rational discussion of Islam’s causal role in American “overseas contingency operations”—the erstwhile “global war on terror”--or the multitude of “man-made disasters” besetting the modern world has become almost impossible in the current hyper-partisan American political climate.

Many on the Left, who can’t be bothered to actually read a Qur’an, remain blindly convinced that there is nothing intrinsically violent in literalist Islam;[1] that all religions are equally peaceful (except perhaps for Christianity); and that the violent legions around the world engaged in decapitation, assassination and detonation in emulation of Muhammad are actually, unbeknownst even to themselves, motivated rather by something, anything, else: alienation, victimization, anti-Americanism, lack of education, etc. Some on the Left—such as candidate, if not President, Barack Obama—even continue clinging to the myth that “poverty causes Islamic terrorism,”[2] empirical data be damned.

Too many on the Right, on the other hand, assume that the history of Islam is coterminous with a history of violence; that the only Muslims that matter are fundamentalist Sunnis motivated by death, domination and the pursuit of houris; and that while there may be a demographic sliver of moderate Muslims, there is no such thing as moderate Islam.[3]

Both are wrong.

President Obama, two months ago, told the New York Times that “the American military would reach out to moderate elements of the Taliban.”[4] In the same interview, the President explained further that “If you talk to General Petraeus…part of the success in Iraq involved reaching out to people that we would consider to be Islamic fundamentalists.” Leaving aside some rather crucial issues (whether the successful “surge” strategy can be translated directly to Afghanistan;[5] the questionable reduction of Sunni shaykhs in Iraq to mere Islamic fundamentalists; and the misconception that such a thing as a “moderate Taliban” actually exists), the Obama administration is nonetheless on the right track (as was that of Bush, albeit more publicly vocal) in its search for non-jihadist Muslims. In this vein, next month the President will deliver a major speech in Egypt, “seeking to strengthen U.S. relations with the Islamic world and fight extremism.”[6] One key to doing the former is to acknowledge that the Islamic world does have a long theological and historical strain of the latter--based largely on a literal reading of the Qur’an and the Hadiths (alleged practices and sayings of Muhammad)—as well as to identify, contact and support moderate branches of Islam.

Islam is not necessarily literally violent, but much if not most of the time literal Islam IS violent. How could it not be? Sura al-Nisa’[4]:34ff says “those wives from whom you fear rebellion….beat them.” Sura Muhammad [47]:3ff and Sura al-Anfal [8]:12ff say “when you encounter the unbelievers on the battlefield, strike off their heads.” Sura al-`Imran[3]:157ff says “If you should die or be slain in the cause of God…before Him you shall be gathered.” Five different sections of the Qur’an promise “dark-eyed” huris, “bashful virgins whom neither man nor jinn will have touched,”[7] to those who die fighting on Allah’s behalf.

Of course, taken literally the Bible—at least the Old Testament—could promote violence: for example Deuteronomy 7:1ff tells the Hebrews not only to avoid intermarrying with the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, etc., but to “tear down their altars” and “utterly destroy them.” But modern Jewish rabbis and Israeli politicians do not cite such passages to justify violence, not just because these ancient peoples no longer exist but because a literal reading of such verses is no longer accepted, either in scholarship or in the popular mind.

As for the New Testament, it’s impossible to read it literally and condone violence. Matthew 26:52 says Jesus told Peter “put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.” Furthermore, Jesus told his followers to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”[8] The Crusades and the Inquisition were rejections of Jesus’ teachings, not fulfillment of them—which is exactly the opposite of the case with Muhammad and jihad. However, there are New Testament passages that, taken literally, are problematic: for example, in Luke 10:19 Jesus told the 70 that “I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions…and nothing will injure you.” There are some tiny Christian denominations that encourage taking these passages literally, even going so far as to handle poisonous snakes during services.[9] But the vast majority of Christians—courtesy of several centuries of Biblical criticism, not to mention application of simple common sense—can put those passages in exegetical and historical context, realizing that what was true for the 12 Apostles and the 70 Disciples two millennia ago, not to mention Jesus Himself, is NOT necessarily binding on us today. Christianity, like Judaism, long ago developed a non-literalist exegetical paradigm, which is adhered to by a majority within each religion.[10]

The same is not true of mainstream Sunni Islam, which makes up some 87% of the world’s 1.5 billion Muslim population. In that majority Muslim community, “the doctrine of taqlid, of adherence to a given legal madhhab,[11] was elaborated into the doctrine that the ‘gates of ijtihad’[12]…had closed in the ninth century” [C.E.].[13] This meant that"the right of ijtihad" -- independent religion-legal reasoning -- was replaced by the duty of taqlid or ‘imitation.’ Henceforth every jurist was an ‘imitator’ (muqallid) bound to accept and follow the doctrine established by his predecessors.”[14] Original ideas about interpretation of the Qur’an were forbidden; only slavish imitation of early Muslim commentators, literalists all, was—and still is, technically—allowed. Thus, a Sunni Muslim confronted with the clear Qur’anic mandate of beheading for infidels on the battlefield cannot advance exegetical arguments that the passage 1) applied only in Muhammad’s time or 2) today is to be read metaphorically as “apologetic decapitation” or the like. The Qur’an reports, you do not get to decide. The ancient school of Mu`tazilism, which did briefly allow for non-literalism regarding the Qur’an, was stamped out in Sunnism.

Fr. Seraphim Rose's Monastery - A Photographic Pilgrimage

"Not only did Hieromonk Seraphim open the whole world of the Orthodox heritage of the Holy Fathers for himself, but he also was able to tell of it in such a way that it attracted millions of people worldwide, carried across by his books, to the self-sacrificing exploration of this heavenly promised land."  — Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov)

For the 33rd anniversary of the repose of Hieromonk Seraphim Rose (1934-1982)

by Archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov), Pravoslavie — September 2, 2015

Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him:
for they shall eat the fruit of their doings

(Isaiah 3:10)

150 years after the repose of St. Seraphim of Sarov, in the opposite corner of the world, a monk who sought to imitate the spiritual labors of the elder of Sarov and took his name in monasticism reposed in the Lord.

Few of the ascetics of piety in the twentieth century played such an important role in the catechism of our compatriots in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia as Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose).

His unusual path to the Church, yet one so familiar and close to us, his strict ascetic life, overwhelmingly living faith, erudition, his deep and joyous discovery of the opportunity to enter the life with Christ has inspired and strengthened a great many seekers of God.

St. Irenaeus of Lyons: 2nd Century Church Father refutes the heresy of Islam

Irenaeus' classic refutation of the heretics, "Image of the King, versus the image of a Fox," anticipates Muhammad's heresy by nearly 500 years.

St Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 1.8; CCEL, ANF01, Ch VIII

Such, then, is their system, which neither the prophets announced, nor the Lord taught, nor the apostles delivered, but of which they boast that beyond all others they have a perfect knowledge.
They gather their views from other sources than the Scriptures; and, to use a common proverb, they strive to weave ropes of sand, while they endeavour to adapt with an air of probability to their own peculiar assertions the parables of the Lord, the sayings of the prophets, and the words of the apostles, in order that their scheme may not seem altogether without support. In doing so, however, they disregard the order and the connection of the Scriptures, and so far as in them lies, dismember and destroy the truth.
By transferring passages, and dressing them up anew, and making one thing out of another, they succeed in deluding many through their wicked art in adapting the oracles of the Lord to their opinions.
Their manner of acting is just as if one, when a beautiful image of a king has been constructed by some skilful artist out of precious jewels, should then take this likeness of the man all to pieces, should rearrange the gems, and so fit them together as to make them into the form of a dog or of a fox, and even that but poorly executed; and should then maintain and declare that this was the beautiful image of the king which the skilful artist constructed, pointing to the jewels which had been admirably fitted together by the first artist to form the image of the king, but have been with bad effect transferred by the latter one to the shape of a dog, and by thus exhibiting the jewels, should deceive the ignorant who had no conception what a king’s form was like, and persuade them that that miserable likeness of the fox was, in fact, the beautiful image of the king.
In like manner do these persons patch together old wives’ fables, and then endeavour, by violently drawing away from their proper connection, words, expressions, and parables whenever found, to adapt the oracles of God to their baseless fictions. We have already stated how far they proceed in this way with respect to the interior of the Pleroma*.
* Pleroma: The divine fullness of the Godhead, see Colossians 1:15-20, esp. v19, "For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell".

St. Irenaeus' metaphor is devastating to Islam because it describes — five centuries before Muhammad — how heretics have always distorted the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, teachings and traditions.

To begin with, the Koran retells Old Testament stories out of sequence, with no historical context, imparting completely different lessons, and confusing names, places and epochs. For instance, the Koran calls Miriam, the mother of Isa, the "sister of Aaron", even though that Miriam lived centuries earlier. Would the God of all make such a mistake?

Secondly, with even greater brazenness, the Koran presents a bizarre, wholly false picture of Jesus. It provides no historical context for its prophet "Isa" (the Koranic name for Jesus), and regurgitates infancy myths clearly lifted from the gnostic false Gospel of Thomas and other spurious sources, while explicitly denying historically verifiable facts, including especially the crucifixion of Jesus.

In contrast, from a purely secular standpoint alone, Jesus the Christ is written of by numerous Roman and Jewish historians from the mid first-century onwards, including Thallus (who wrote circa 52 AD about Jesus’ crucifixion and the darkness over the land), Mara Bar-Serapion (writing ca. 70 AD), the renowned Jewish historian Josephus (ca. 93 AD), the Roman historian Tacitus (ca. 110-120 AD), and others. The Evangelist Luke frames his gospel narrative with historical references to people, rulers, places and events to such a thorough extent that he is clearly writing a verifiable historical narrative; Luke, even more than Matthew or Mark, holds up quite well to historical fact-checking. Whereas in the Koran, there are simply no facts to check.

5 Middle East Churches That Could Cease to Exist If Islamic State Influence Continues to Spread

A high-level overview of five of the local Christian Church communions most severely threatened by the 21st-century resurgence of pure Islam.

Coptic Icon of Jesus Christ, Pantocrator

The below article is a welcome contribution to the education of American Protestants and Evangelicals, some of whom do not consider Eastern Christians of any kind to be true Christians. This is also a great help for us in our daily prayers for those being persecuted for their faith in Jesus Christ.

At the same time, it must be noted that the thumbnail sketches in the Christian Post article below concerning non-Chalcedonian Christology do not do justice to the theology of these "Oriental" churches. Further reading for an expanded understanding of this issue is highly recommended.

Therefore, immediately below are links to related articles which explore in far greater depth the question over the "non-Chalcedonian" Christian Churches.

_______

THE NON-CHALCEDONIAN CHURCHES:

Regarding the division which occurred after the Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon in 451, and recent efforts to examine anew the faith of the non-Chalcedonian churches, see the following:

The report at Coptic.net linked above begins with this statement:
Since 451, at the Council of Chalcedon,  there has been a division within the Orthopdox [sic] Church due to different Christological terminology. In recent times, members  of the Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian Orthodox Churches  have met together coming to a clear understanding that both  families have always loyally maintained the same authentic Orthodox Christological faith, and the unbroken  continuity of  the apostolic tradition, though they may have used Christological terms in different ways. It is this common faith and continuous loyality [sic] to the apostolic tradition  that has been the basis of the conversations held over the last two decades towards unity and communion.

For a traditionalist Orthodox response to recent dialogues between Orthodox and non-Chalcedonian churches, see:

As for my own view of the non-Chalcedonian question, I give thanks to God for all things, even for our sufferings and for this new age of global Christian persecution, for it enables each one of us to confess Jesus Christ, and to prove our love for Him and our faith in Him. Regardless of semantic differences in the theological expression of our faith in Jesus Christ, we are united at the very least by a communion of blood, a communion of the Cross, a communion of martyrdom.

5 Middle East Churches That Could Cease to Exist If Islamic State Influence Continues to Spread
Christian Post via Pravmir — August 24, 2015

There are Christian churches throughout the Middle East that trace their roots back to the time of the apostles that could cease to exist if Islamic State and other radical Muslim groups continue to gain control of more territory in the region.

The Islamic State Caliphate: Darkness falls across the Middle
East, North Africa, Central Asia, and on into Europe.
Author George J. Marlin, who is also chairman of the Board of Aid to the Church in Need USA, recently released a book titled Christian Persecutions in the Middle East, which not only discusses the growing threat to believers in the region, but also provides the history of many of the churches that have existed in the Middle East since the time of the apostles that could now be facing extinction at the hands of Muslim extremists.

Listed below are five of those churches.

1. The Syrian Orthodox Church

The Syrian Orthodox Church came into its modern formation when Syrian Christians rejected decrees made by the Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, and Western Christian Churches at the Council of Chalcedon in A.D. 451. The Council acknowledged that Christ has two natures, divine and human, which come together in one person.

In an attempt to hold onto their beliefs about Christ, which state that He is one nature of full humanity and full divinity, Syrian Christians regrouped under their own bishops and broke away from the established church.

The Syrian Orthodox Church traces its origins back to the church of Antioch found in the New Testament and considers St. Paul its first Bishop. The head of the Syrian Orthodox Church today is known as the “Patriarch of the God-protected City of Antioch and of all the Domain of the Apostolic Throne.” He is elected by fellow bishops and must be celibate. The patriarch resides in Damascus and the church has archdioceses in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Palestine.

Today, the Syrian Orthodox Church has 5 million members worldwide.

2. The Coptic Orthodox Church

The Coptic Orthodox Church — Coptic meaning Egyptian — traces its roots back to A.D. 42 when St. Mark the Apostle first brought Christianity to Egypt. Monophysitism, the belief that Christ has a single divine nature, first took root in Egypt and was embraced by the head of the church and patriarch of Alexandria, Dioscorus.
